Frequently asked questions.
When is the best time of year to fish the Little Red River?
The Little Red River is unique as a fishery because it has great trout fishing year round. There is no bad time to fish the Little Red. That said, the wintertime is known to be especially productive. Starting in November to about March, anglers that can brave the cold are in store for some incredible days on the water.
How do I catch more brown trout on the Little Red River?
Of all the questions we get asked, this is the most common one. Where are all the brown trout? We can assure you, they are definitely here. The hidden treasure of the Little Red River is our brown trout. In contrast to our rainbow trout, no brown trout have been stocked in the river since the mid 70s. This means for the angler who wants a true wild brown trout experience, the Little Red River is the place for you. Each brown is uniquely beautiful, totally wild, and yes, difficult to catch. By far the most effective way to catch them on a fly rod is by throwing streamers in big water. High flows push these browns out of their hiding spots and make them easier to find. Of course, they can also be caught on nymphs and even dry flies under the right conditions. But for the angler who wants to head hunt for a trophy brown trout, work on your cast. Become proficient casting a streamer and our guides will be able to put you in the right spots to make it happen.
Do you offer guided night fishing trips on the Little Red River?
The secret is out. If you want to catch the brown trout of a lifetime, your best chances at finding him are at night. Under the cover of darkness, big predatory brown trout come out of their hiding places and go on the hunt. I have been fortunate to catch some great brown trout during the day, but personally all of my biggest fish have been caught at night. We do offer guided night fishing trips, but only under limited circumstances. Night fishing with a fly rod is very difficult. It is not for the beginner angler, or the angler whose cast needs much improvement. If you want us to take you out at night, you need to book a couple trips in the day with us first so we can throw streamers and work on getting your casting skills dialed in. Then when we determine you are ready, we can show you what monsters come out at night on the Little Red River.
Are there other species can we target on the Little Red River?
Yes! One of my favorite things to do is go fish the downstream sections of the Little Red River for carp, buffalo, and drum. Our river has some buffalo that will truly make your jaw drop. Tying into one with a small leech or fly on light tippet will make your heart race just as much as a big brown trout. We also occasionally find smallmouth and largemouth bass, as well as pickerel and gar on the river. Just let our guides know what you are interested in targeting and we will do our best to put you where you need to be to catch that fish of a lifetime.
